John Scarfone - Bass/Vocals
John Scarfone, one of the founding members of FATAL MAIM, was born the same year that the british Rock invasion hit United States, but he got his first earful of music in Italy at the age of two(2) when his Nonno Francesco, his uncle Attilio and his father Tiberio "Tab" would strum on their acoustic guitars and stroll and dance around drinking wine and singing Italian folk tunes. By the age of five(5), he was banging on pots and pans, playing air guitar and listening to motown artists, Elvis, James Brown and his mother and father's Italian records. During his pre-teens he was forced to listen to his older sister Tina, playing teenie bopper songs from Donnie & Marie Osmond, The Partridge Family, Leif Garret and of course Michael Jackson. One day Tina brought home an Aerosmith Album, that's when his passion for rock music began. His Dad bought him an Epiphone semi-hollow body 4 string electriic bass. He saved every penny he could find and every time he visited a record store he would buy albums from artists like Kiss, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Boston, Lynard Skynard, Doors, Jefferson Starship, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Nazareth, Cream, Black Sabbath, Jaco Pastorius and the list goes on. Although he had no formal music training before the age of 12, he would sit for hours listening, learning and playing all of his favorite tunes, note for note. Later on, his parents decided that if he was going to continue to play music, it was time he learned how to do it right. He began taking lessons from well known and respected Jazz Guitarist Eddie McGuire, these lessons were cut short when Eddie passed away. After this devastating blow, he stopped playing for a long time. One day, while attending St. Rose Of Lima Catholic school, he just decided to brush off the dust and went looking for a new teacher. He found instructor Joe Robuck and continued taking lessons until he thought he was able to handle it by himself. It was during this time that he formed a band with neighbor and fellow guitarist Matt Frederick and classmate drummer Chris Rabbits. Using Pat Rabbit's Gibson SG, the three jammed and partied daily at Chris's parents home on Ruskin Drive, a great time and fond memories for eveyone. In 10th grade, John and Matt practiced and wrote songs daily and eventually formed a 4 piece band with drummer Mark Fozart and singer Danny Grabill. Their first show was a high school talent competition where the foursome played Lynard Skynard's Freebird in front of a packed house of over 1,200 students, they received a standing ovation. They later recruited Bob Weidman (Drummer/Slammer) and started the band "ARIAN." After high school, John went to The School of Broadcasting Arts in Ohio to become a Recording Engineer and when he returned, him and Matt joined with Singer Craig Boar, drummer Evan Hileman and later JB Batrus, Jeff Wallack, Steve Oswalt, Jay Terdiman and Denny Frank in Lizzy Borden, Rapid Fire, The Need, etc. Afterwards, John broke away and joined the band Giornesto (Todd/Slammer). This is where he was introduced to a whole new level of music, Hardcore Thrash Metal. John wrote the song Sin-O-Rama while working with Giornesto. This style of music became the single most powerful influence that prompted John to assemble a new band and compose the songs and lyrics that became FATAL MAIM's One Beyond The Grave.
John uses Peavey & Kramer Bass Guitars with GHS boomer bass strings along with an original hand made "Scar" bass that was made by singer Scott Miller in high school wood shops and repainted by Felix Koss. He also uses Gallian Kruger Power amps and Ampeg SVT 8-10" cabinets.
